MACKINAC BRIDGE RUN ACES DAY MENTORING: A RUNNING START
MENTORING: A RUNNING START 2007 AND 2008
Event Description:
Mentoring: A Running Start provides an opportunity for underprivileged
youth and their adult mentors (for example, Big Brothers Big Sisters
matches) to train for a 5K race to learn lessons in teamwork, goal
setting and accomplishment.
Event objective: The program aims to instill a life-long love for running and physical fitness in Michigan youth and adults.
Key Planning Tasks:
Share information and motivation with team members through e-mail, and program blog
Partner with sponsors to cover program costs including running shoes and attire
Organize a reception at the Michigan Governor’s Residence for teams and sponsors
Plan all details of a weekend trip for participants including hotel, transportation, food, itinerary and chaperones
Response:
A mentor said of her mentee, “I didn’t think she’d ever run a mile
straight before we started and now she’s participating in sports at
school and exercising in her free time.” The mentee said of their
experience, “I showed myself that when I really try and put my mind to
something I can do it and as long as I have people by my side
supporting me, I can do anything.”
Media Relations Tactic:
Write profiles for each team, and pitch their story to relevant outlets across the state.
